Preventing Diabetic Retinopathy You can help protect yourself from diabetic retinopathy by having your eyes checked at least once a year by an ophthalmologist. They include several days of blurred vision after each treatment and possible loss of side peripheral vision. Vitrectomy may be performed as an outpatient procedure or as an inpatient procedure, usually requiring a single overnight stay in the hospital. A procedure called laser photo coagulation can be performed to seal or destroy growing or leaking blood vessels in the retina.
